The day has come. Your puppy is finally moving in! Now it’s time to give them the best care possible and feed them tasty and healthy food. But how do you choose the perfect puppy food? And what are the nutritional needs and requirements for your puppy to grow? Our vet explains...
When do I switch to new puppy food?
The breeder probably gave you food that your puppy is already used to. It’s a good idea to continue feeding this until your puppy is settled in their new, happy home. Once they feel at home, you can gradually make the change by mixing their old food with their new food. We recommend gradually introducing dog food over 4 days. Like this:
What nutrients do puppies need?
Playtime is the best time for puppies - they get to explore and run around! That’s why they need about twice as many calories a day as an adult dog. That means more protein and fat but also other nutrients like calcium and phosphorus. Too much or too little of these nutrients can cause problems, so finding the rightbalance is essential. Therefore, it’s important to choose a recipe that specifically meets the nutritional needs of your energized pup!

Just like kids, puppies have big appetites - all that running around and growing up releases a lot of energy! That means you should feed your puppy at least three or four times a day. Always follow the daily recommended amount mentioned on the packaging.
When it comes to feeding schedules, it’s important to keep a routine where you feed them at the same time every day. This will help your puppy maintain a stable metabolism and a healthy digestion. It’s also important not to feed your puppy too late in the evening. You want to give your puppy plenty of time to digest their food and poop before bedtime.
We recommend sticking with the three-meals-a-day routine until your puppy is fully grown. Once they’re an ‘adult’, you can decrease it to two meals a day. For smaller breeds, this should happen around the age of six to eight months. For medium, large and giant breeds, this should occur around nine to ten months, eleven to twelve months and twelve to thirteen months respectively.
